[ minibank ]
The minibank image above was scanned from a
"bumper sticker" found in a large box of materials discovered in Dick Watt's office
when he left UBSC. However, instead of being an actual bumper
sticker, I believe it was a peel-n-stick logo that was to be slapped onto the ATM
machines when they were installed.
The six images below were scanned from 35MM slides found in that same box of
materials. The cardboard slide holders are all marked "1989".

Most times it was minibank ,
but
sometimes it was MiniBank .

United Banks of Colorado
Chairman Neil Roberts and minibank ATM.
This was from a slide taken more than a decade before the images above -- circa 1976-1977.
I need to re-find that slide and look for a date code on it.
I was uncertain as to the manufacturer of that ATM --
Diebold? NCR? Then, in July'08, I received an
email from Roger Pelot:
"I saw the minibank section on the web site
and have some information for you. The picture with Neil Roberts at the ATM shows
an ATM manufactured by Docutel.
"United Banks purchased them when they were off-line devices,
and when Docutel came out with an on-line retrofit, United
decided to put them on-line. I was the EFT project manager and we contracted with NCR,
who had a software interface for the Docutel ATMs, to do the ATM interface.
"We would off-load transactions from the ATMs at night and send them to the IBM system
for processing. When application processing was completed, a strip file was taken from
the IBM system and loaded on the NCR system for on-line ATM processing.
The first bank to go on-line with their Docutel ATM was UB Longmont,
in October 1976.
"I might add that the Docutel dispensed money using envelopes! The ATM teller
had to put $25 in each envelope, and the ATM dispensed the envelope(s) in to a drawer
that opened up for the customer.
"I designed the ATM card which had a Docutel stripe on the reverse used to identify the
customer and it also functioned for off-line use.
"Don't ask me how I remember this - I don't know what I did yesterday!"
Thank you, Roger!!

Used at UBSC in testing the cash dispenser operation(s).

(At least I do not believe we ever dispensed any to real customers.)

This UB Pueblo
minibank receipt was found as a bookmark in a science fiction paperback
in a used bookstore in May of 2008. After 30 years it was almost parchment.
So non-Y2K Compliant!
A "story" from an "outsider"
On Jannuary 14, 2019, I received an email out of the blue from someone that had done a
little web searching on the history of ATMs.

Hello, just thought I'd share a story - I was talking to a millennial the other day and he
said that ATMs hadn't been around for that long and I disagreed. I said that I remembered
United Minibanks from when I was a freshman in college at the
University of Colorado in 1980. I don't recall calling them ATMs back then but they were
early versions of what we have today. I was pleased that when I googled it, I was able to
find photos online so thank you for posting. :-)

A "story" from Roger Pelot
In May, 2024, I received the following in an email from Roger Pelot:
I saw on the site about the Minibank.
You asked if anyone had any stories. So here's one.
Sometime after the online implementation I went to the
Aurora Minibank to withdraw money and there were three
customers there baffled because the ATM display was out so they couldn't retrieve
their money. I said, "let me see". Having installed the machines I knew the
sequence necessary to activate the ATM so I gave it a try without the
display and was able to get my money.
They asked, "How did you do that?" I told them of my Minibank
involvement and each one had me guide them through the process and they all got their
money. Boy did they thank me!
Cheers, Roger
