Reece "Skip" Hughes
June 29, 1938 - May 19, 2014
Skip passed away after a lengthy illness at HopeWest Hospice on May 19, 2014.
He was 75 years old.
Skip was born June 29, 1938, at Colorado General Hospital in Denver, Colorado to
Eugene and Loretta Hughes. The family lived in Denver for the first five years of
his life, then moved to Louviers, Colorado, where his Dad worked for E.I. Dupont.
The family resided in Louviers for a number of years, where indeed it was a great
experience to be raised in a fully contained company village. He attended first
through eighth grade at the Louviers school.
Skip graduated Douglas County High School in 1956, where he was active in all three
of the major sports. When he was a junior in high school, he met the love of his
life, Norma Dean Carpenter. They were married after graduating from high school.
He worked at Dupont while attending night school and later started working in the
Data Processing Industry. He held many management positions for banks, hospitals,
and the Uranium Industry. He was at one time known as the Mayor of Ticaboo, Utah,
and was in the Army National Guard Reserves for 17 years.
The family moved to Grand Junction in January of 1978, and have resided there since.
Skip was a 15 year member of the Redlands Lions Club, where he was past President.
He received two Lion of the Year awards, along with the Melvin Jones award, the highest
award given in Lions. He was also a six year member of the JUCO committee.
Skip is survived by his wife, Norma; children, Tab Hughes, Randy Hughes, and Nicole
(Shane) Lee, all residing in Grand Junction. He is also survived by seven grandchildren,
and five great-grandchildren, as well as sister-in-law, Phyllis Clinger of Parker, Colorado.
He is preceded in death by parents, Eugene and Loretta Hughes; sister, Jacqueline Hall;
brother-in-law, John A. Carpenter Jr, and mother and father-in-law,
John A. and Lola Carpenter.
Burial will take place at New Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Roice Hurst Humane
Society, 362 28 Road, Grand Junction, CO or HopeWest Hospice of Grand Junction.
